The Music Library Association Has Announced Its Publication Awards for 1992

The Vincent H. Duckles Award for the best book-length bibliography or other research tool in music was given to Mary Kay Duggan for her book Italian Music Incunabula: Printers and Type (Berkeley: University of California Press, 1992). The MLA Publications Awards Committee concluded that "In this extremely important study of the early history of music printing, Duggan has made a technical and complex subject clear for all readers. Her book provides a history of Italian music incunabula, examines the music type specimens used by individual printers, and concludes with an accurate and detailed bibliographic catalog of these incunabulae. The author has been well served by her publisher so that numerous illustrations help the reader to understand what the printers were able to do and how they had to adapt the music to existing constraints. Duggan's insightful bibliographic study lays the groundwork for further study of early printed books and the music they contain."

Danette Cook Adamson and Mimi Tashiro received the Richard S. Hill Award for the best article on music librarianship or article of a music-bibliographic nature for their "Servants, Scholars, and Sleuths: Early Leaders in California Music Librarianship," published in NOTES 48 (March 1992): 806-35. …
