Dr. Bernadine Branchaw, Western Michigan University professor of business information systems and ABC President in 1992-1993, died of cancer on May 20, 1994.

She was born January 23, 1933, in Joliet, Illinois. She earned her bachelor's degree from the College of St. Francis in Joliet and her master's and doctoral degrees from Northern Illinois University in 1970 and 1972.

She joined the WMU faculty in 1971 and taught undergraduate classes in such topics as business communication, office, organization, report writing, and secretarial administration, as well as graduate methods courses. In 1987 she was one of two WMU faculty members honored for their contributions by the Michigan Association of Governing Boards.

Over the past 18 years, Branchaw wrote 14 books on business communication with her colleague, Joel P. Bowman, interim chairperson of business information systems. Their last book was The Delmar Reference Manual: Essentials for the Electronic Office (Delmar Publishing) in 1994. They were also active in consulting, with more than 20 years of experience conducting communication workshops and seminars. The two were well-known speakers both locally and nationally.

"Bernie was a very well-loved instructor for more than 20 years:'bowman said. "She was always held in highest esteem by her students. She made an immense contribution to the department, both personally and professionally. She would settle for nothing less than excellence in everything she did, and she will be missed." Bowman said that she will be remembered for her extraordinary vitality and special talent for bringing out the best in people. "She was an extremely popular and effective teacher - the kind who has students returning to campus twenty years later saying that she was the one who made the difference. …
