Research Explores the Impact of AMD on Quality of Life

"Quality of Life in Age-Related Macular Degeneration: A Review of the Literature" is a white paper that was recently issued by Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) Alliance International--a global, nonprofit coalition based in Canada of organizations focused on vision and seniors who are working to raise awareness of AMD--provides the results of research into the impact of vision loss due to AMD on the quality of life and psychological well-being of individuals with the disorder. According to the research published in the paper, the reaction of patients to AMD is comparable to the reaction to the onset of cancer or coronary heart disease. Written by Jan Mitchell and Clare Bradley of the Department of Psychology at the Royal Holloway University of London, the report was issued to mark the start of a global outreach campaign by AMD Alliance International to raise awareness of the little-known psychological effects of AMD, including the fact that diagnosis of AMD and threat of blindness increases depression. Further findings included in the paper show that low-vision rehabilitation services help to reduce the negative impact of AMD, help people adjust to living with the disease, and help to improve overall outcomes.

As a result of the white paper, a consortium of Canadian organizations concerned about vision and vision loss--including the Canadian National Institute for the Blind, Canadian Ophthalmological Society, Canadian Association of Optometrists, Foundation Fighting Blindness, and National Coalition for Vision Health--call for a broad, government-funded public education campaign emphasizing AMD awareness, risk factors, early detection, and vision rehabilitation. …
