Not All Bankers Play Golf: Put on Your Leathers, It's Time to Ride!

For the record, you don't have to ride a Harley to go to Sturgis, S.D. It's a motorcycle event--all makes are welcome. But if you happen to arrive astride a Harley-Davidson, you'll be in the majority.

"LD" McDonald, president and CEO, Midwest Independent Bancshares, a bankers-bank holding company based in Jefferson City, Mo., says he rode his Honda to the Sturgis Rally Last summer as part of a bank-run outing, and he didn't catch any grief about his mount. Maybe there was a little peer pressure, however. McDonald bought himself a new Harley Last fall and will ride it in this year's banker bike trip to Sturgis, for the 67th annual rally, Aug. 6-12.

We don't know how many bankers ride motorcycles. It's not asked on the call report. But we do sense it's a bigger number than anyone would guess.

The most well-known of the breed is the current ABA Chairman, Earl McVicker, who is CEO of Central Bank & Trust, Hutchinson, Kan. Readers will recall a cover photo several years ago of McVicker riding his Harley. Or you may have read about his avocation in Last October's profile. In that article, we invited any banker biker to send us a photo of themselves with their machine. On this and the following pages, you can see a selection of the shots we received. Not a pinstripe among them, but plenty of leather, bandannas, and a few tattoos. Who knew?
