Judy Cernkovich, a teacher of students with visual impairments and an active member of the field of visual impairment and blindness in the state of Ohio, recently died. Mrs. Cernkovich received a bachelor of science in elementary education and a master of science in special education from Southern Illinois University; she was certified as a teacher of children with visual impairments by the University of Toledo in Ohio. She taught children from birth to 5 years of age through the Wood County Educational Service Center, serving individuals in 22 counties in central Ohio. She also gave numerous conference presentations and staff training sessions and served as a regular guest lecturer on young children with visual impairments for the special education teacher training program at Bowling Green State University in Ohio. In addition, she conducted numerous in-service training sessions for those working with children who are blind or visually impaired and conducted vision screening training for Ohio Department of Health service coordinators throughout Northwest Ohio. Mrs. Cernkovich was an active participant in AER of Ohio (AERO), in which she held several leadership roles over many years, including president, and planned and implemented three statewide AERO conferences. …
