A note from Jean-Marie Aubert.

On behalf of the Francophone Ecumenical Missiology Association I am pleased to be able to present the proceedings of the third European missiology conference, held in Paris from 24 to 28 August 2006 with the theme: <>.

This meeting was prepared jointly over two years by the European missiological associations which are members of IAMS, the International Association for Mission Studies: The British and Irish Association for Mission Studies (BIAMS), the Central and Eastern European Association for Mission Studies (CEEAMS), the Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Missionswissenschaft (DGMW), the Missionswissenschaftliches Institut (MWI) and the Nordic Institute of Mission and Ecumenical Research (NIME). This conference was organized jointly by all of these associations and I want to thank them for their cooperation which has been both effective and amicable.

Hundred and twenty-five theologians from twenty-six European countries and from practically all the churches which exist on the European continent attended the conference, together with some theologians from other continents. We met to share experience of and reflections about mission in a Europe heavily influenced by the results of the period of the Enlightenment.

One remarkable thing about this conference was the presence of a good number of young theologians, particularly amongst the participants from eastern and northern Europe. Southern Europe was very much under-represented despite all our efforts, making personal invitations and trying to put to good use the geographical location of France between Latin and Anglo-Saxon Europe.

The representatives from other continents played a full role in our joint research, bringing essential counterpoints to our approach, reminding us that mission is from everywhere to everywhere and that no-one is ever a missionary on their own. …
