This 16th edition contains more than 350 data tables and charts with current and historical data from over 200 sources on the status of women and minorities in science and engineering education and employment. Five chapters cover the general population and pre-college education, enrollment in higher education, degrees earned in higher education, science and engineering employment (general, academic and federal), and international education and employment. The report finds:

* Over the past 40 years, women have more than doubled their share of the bachelor's degrees awarded in science and engineering. In 1966, they earned 24.8 percent of the S&E baccalaureates; in 2004, they earned 50.4 percent. At the master's level, women earned just 13.3 percent of the S&E degrees in 1966, but in 2004 they earned 43.6 percent. At the doctorate level, women earned 37.4 percent of the S&E doctorates awarded in 2004--nearly five times the 8.0 percent they earned in 1966.

* Women have made great strides toward preparing for careers in medically-related fields and law. In the last two decades, women entered these areas in such numbers that they received a majority of the first professional degrees awarded in optometry (57 percent), pharmacy (67 percent) and veterinary medicine (74 percent) in 2003-04. …
