Are you and your students attuned to what's happening in Earth science? Earth Science Week 2007 (October 14-20) is the perfect time to check out the latest developments in geoscience education and research.

You'll be in good company. Many thousands of educators, young people, and geoscientists around the world will be participating. This year marks the start of the International Polar Year (IPY), the International Year of Planet Earth (IYPE), the International Heliophysical Year (IHY), and the International Electronic Geophysical Year (eGY). Promoting a spirit of international cooperation, these initiatives will generate geoscience research and awareness vital to Earth science's impact on society.

In addition, the American Geological Institute (AGI) will be launching a nationwide data-collection effort on geoscience education and premiering its four-part television miniseries The Faces of Earth on The Science Channel. But these are just a few of the high-profile events taking place.

During Earth Science Week 2007, millions of people in all 50 states and around the globe will be sampling groundwater, monitoring weather, touring quarries, exploring caves, preparing competition projects, visiting museums and science centers, and learning about Earth science. …
