I'VE LONG BEEN PROUD OF THE ROLE ABA has played in bringing together diverse elements of the banking industry in common purpose. That unifying role is about to be significantly enhanced with the merger of ABA and America's Community Bankers.

It's a union many bankers have been advocating for years, and we're pleased to have their support. We've also been encouraged by the success of similar association mergers in more than 20 states. In fact, I've received several emails since the June announcement from bankers and state association executives testifying to the benefits of the trade group mergers in their states.

So what are those benefits? What can ABA and ACB members expect from the new ABA?

In short--more.

More expertise. The association's combined staff of more than 390 employees will be able to offer guidance on topics ranging from wealth management to mortgage lending to anti-money laundering. And they're just a toll-free phone call or e-mail away.

More opportunities for training and professional development. ABA is one of the oldest names in the training business, with offerings that include certifications, AIB courses, the Stonier Graduate School of Banking and dozens of specialized conferences, schools, and telephone briefings. ACB, with 115 years under its belt, has strong credentials of its own and offers specialized programs that ABA does not. Bringing both sets of professional development offerings together means bank employees--from the executive offices to the back room--will have access to top-notch resources targeting just about every line of business in banking. …
