Lauriat Lane, the founding Editor of English Studies in Canada, died peacefully on March 20, 2005 in Fredericton. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, he earned his BA, NIA and PHD from Harvard, taught at Harvard and Cornell and then, from 1960, at the University of New Brunswick. As Editor from 1975 to 1984, with his editorial team at UNB, he established the workings and status of Esc as a major journal of English literary scholarship and criticism. I believe he chose the name. Designed to reflect the interests of the whole community of scholars in English language and literature, including American and Commonwealth, English Studies in Canada received articles on literature of all periods from Anglo-Saxon on. Larry Lane's interests, as shown in his many articles and books, were similarly broad, from Beowulf (Esc #22) to Huckleberry Finn and Archibald MacLeish. A Dickensian scholar of note, with George H. Ford he published a major anthology of Dickens criticism, 71u: Dickens Critics (1961), with a significant introduction, at a time when Dickens studies were taking their modern upsurge. A frequent adjudicator of doctoral and research grants for the Canada Council and assessor of manuscripts for academic journals, he also contributed the chapter on "Literary Scholarship and Criticism" to Literary History of Canada (2nd edition). In 1980, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, in recognition especially of his work for the academy in establishing Esc as the significant Canadian journal it is. At UNB, as well as teaching, he served as Chair of the English Department and Associate Dean of Graduate Studies, and retired, a Professor Emeritus, in 1990. …
