On November 30, 2007, Sharon L. Mikrut will step down as president of the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals (ACVREP), a position she has held since October 2002 when she replaced Eileen Siffermann, the first president of the academy. In a letter of resignation that was published in the October 23, 2007, newsletter of ACVREP, Ms. Mikrut explained her decision: "The primary factor influencing my decision is a need to strike a balance between my professional and personal life." After earning a master's degree in social work from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, Ms. Mikrut's 25-year career began at the Center for Independent Living in Ann Arbor, where she worked as an independent living skills specialist. Over the years, Ms. Mikrut has held various positions in the field of disability as chair of the Colorado Coalition for Persons with Disabilities; vocational counselor (1985-1988) and executive director (1990-1991) for EmployAbility; state affirmative action coordinator for persons with disabilities for the Colorado Department of Personnel; and executive director of the Rocky Mountain Regional Brain Injury Center, Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, Colorado Department of Human Services. …
