Dr Lisa Strelein Visiting Research Fellow and Director of the Native Title Research Unit (NTRU) is also currently Director of Research Programs. Dr Strelein is involved in two NTRU research projects: prescribed bodies corporate (PBCs); and taxation, trusts and the distribution of benefits. Dr Strelein convened a PBC workshop for native title representative body staff in December 2006 and, together with Ms Tran Tran, published a workshop report arising from this meeting. In June 2007, Dr Strelein travelled to the Torres Strait to meet with senior members of the Poruma, Mer and Moa islands PBCs and Torres Strait Regional Authority native title staff about potential research partnerships. Dr Strelein established a research partnership with the Minerals Council of Australia to sponsor PBC case studies.
Dr Strelein convened a workshop for native title representative body senior professional officers in September 2006 examining taxation, trusts and the distribution of benefits. Dr Strelein completed a discussion paper for, and gave a presentation at, this workshop. Together with Ms Tran Tran, Dr Strelein published a workshop report detailing the current issues associated with post-determination benefits, the scope and scale of agreements, the legal requirements for creating a charitable trust and maintaining charitable trust status, practical issues in creating a trust and effective distribution policies. Dr Strelein has established a research partnership examining these issues with Dr Manuhuia Barcham from the Centre for Indigenous Governance and Development at Massey University, New Zealand and accepted an invitation from Dr Barcham to undertake a research trip to New Zealand in January-February 2007. …
