Developing a Successful Physician-Hospital Organization, a new AHA book by Jennings Ryan & Kolb, Inc., in cooperation with the Society for Healthcare Planning and Marketing of the AHA, is a comprehensive guide to the successful organization and development of a physician-hospital organization (PHO) and a strategic planning resource for an existing organization.

A PHO is a vehicle that enables hospitals and physicians to work cooperatively to accomplish various mutually desirable goals (e.g., contract with MCOs, develop standards of care, build trust between hospitals and independent physicians, etc). Directed towards senior management, the test covers every aspect of PHO development - from strategic feasibility to organizational and operational issues.

The book has 12 chapters and 4 appendixes. The first chapter, "Introduction to PHOs," defines the PHO concept and describes its benefits, drawbacks, and legal implications. Chapter 2, Developing a PHO," provides an overview of the PHO formation process and includes a timetable and work plan that can be used as a prototype for mapping out an implementation strategy. Chapter 3, "Performing an Early Market Assessment," delineates the first activity in PHO formation, assessing local market readiness to determine whether and how a PHO can help the hospital(s) and physicians compete for health care dollars in a managed-care environment Chapters 4 through 9 present specific business, legal, and tax issues that must be addressed throughout PHO planning and development
