Carl R. Augusto, president and chief executive officer (CEO) of AFB, was elected president of the North American/Caribbean Region of the World Blind Union (WBU) on April 17, 2008, at the semiannual meeting of the WBU region held in Nassau, Bahamas. Augusto succeeds Jim Gibbons, president and CEO of National Industries for the Blind, who has held the position since 2004. WBU represents over 160 million blind and visually impaired persons in 177 member countries and is the only organization entitled to speak for the world's visually impaired people before global organizations such as the United Nations.

Mr. Augusto has spent his entire career working in the field of visual impairment and blindness. Prior to joining AFB, he served as executive director of the Cincinnati Association for the Blind, a multiservice private agency, held several staff and management positions with the National Accreditation Council for Agencies Serving the Blind and Visually Handicapped in New York City and worked as a rehabilitation counselor.
