Meet Callie Lane-2008 Elizabeth Breathwaite Student Leadership Award Winner

Article excerpt

At the 2008 ACEI Annual Conference in Atlanta, Georgia, I had the opportunity to meet Callie Lane, one of ACEI's Elizabeth Breathwaite Student Leadership Award recipients. Callie, a full-time student at the University of Central Florida, Orlando, majoring in elementary education, will graduate in May 2009. She works hard to maintain a 4.0 grade point average, instructs a hearing-impaired child 25 hours a week, volunteers, and serves as President of the ACEI-UCF Branch.

Callie joined ACEI in June 2006, and immediately stepped into a leadership role as ACEI-UCF Vice-President. In that capacity, she arranged professional development workshops and organized fundraisers. As President, Callie encourages others to join ACEI and continues to raise funds for projects to benefit children. This year, the ACEIUCF Branch raised $1,500 to pay for electricity in a children's school in Kenya. Callie and her fellow Branch members feel a great sense of accomplishment in their successful endeavors.

Since the 2nd grade, Callie has wanted to be a teacher. She attended a school that emphasized kinesthetic and discovery learning, which has inspired her to teach in the same manner. After graduation, Callie plans to obtain a teaching position in an international school overseas, work for two years to expand her knowledge, and return with a broadened perspective.
