Outreach in Lithuanian Music Libraries

Article excerpt

English Abstract

Outreach for libraries can go in two directions--incoming and outgoing. The Lithuanian music libraries have been the recipient of donations of music materials from a variety of sources (IAML donations alone are a third of the material received) which are critical in helping the libraries succeed in their mission of preserving the nation's identity. Correspondingly, the libraries also provide Lithuanian music outreach for Lithuanian needs in other countries and in doing so, help preserve Lithuanian culture elsewhere.

Public Library Overview

The public library system in Lithuania is a classic one: we have regional public libraries and centralized systems of municipal public libraries with branches in cities, towns, and villages. In 2005 there were 60 Public Libraries in municipalities and 1,311 subsidiary public library branches. In those libraries are 3,378 librarians. We are proud of our country's 4 bookmobiles and our services to homebound people are quite popular. The population of Lithuania is about three and half million people (using 2001 data).

Nearly twenty percent (19.3 %) of the country's population are library users. Circulation figures of nearly 44.5 million gives us the equivalent of each inhabitant of the country borrowing 12.7 items from libraries in 2005. According to European standards, each library should stock 250 items per 1,000 readers. Unfortunately, in Lithuania those figures are less--only 83 books per 1000. In 2005, libraries received 763,581 items, with only 0.30% of them being audio (sound) items. We find that the figures for music libraries are very sad.

Music Libraries in 2005:

* 430,400 items of music literature, scores, and music records were stocked by music libraries. …
