Last October some bankers attending ABA's Annual Convention in San Francisco got a special invitation. H.P. Chia, a member of ABA's Community Bankers Council, welcomed other members to a reception at his bank. The members could rest assured, however, they wouldn't be sipping cocktails at teller windows or nibbling hors d'oeuvres at loan officers' desks. The offices of the Bank of Canton of California, where Chia is chairman and CEO, are not your typical bank building.

A decade ago the bank moved into San Francisco's historic U.S. Subtreasury Building, built in 1875. The city required that Chia preserve the historical integrity of the building. He decided to leave the first three floors relatively untouched and devote them to a museum that would be open to the public for free. The museum displays exhibits highlighting the history of the Pacific Rim.

Today, about 50 visitors stroll through the Pacific Heritage Museum daily. The museum is currently featuring its seventh exhibit entitled "Midsummer Medley Stroll. …
