At first glance one might dismiss this book as simply just another book on using games to enhance mathematics learning outcomes. The title 'The Maths Game', however is a clever play on words and the author's name, George Booker should encourage you to pick it up and flick through the pages. Yes you will find plenty of games that are easy to make and play but you will find so much more.

Most maths game are designed to provide children with additional practice but George Booker illustrates how games may be used to help children construct mathematical concepts. The maths game includes sections on learning mathematics, the social context for learning mathematics and research on using instructional games in learning mathematics. The author then builds a framework for using instructional games.

The games are then distributed across four chapters; numeration, computation, fractions and problem solving. In each chapter you will find plenty of games but also a clear explanation of the mathematics involved and the relationship between the game and the topic. …
