Will April 17 Be the Day You Help Teach Children to Save?

While proposals to liberalize rules for Individual Retirement Accounts have gained attention in Washington (proposals which ABA supports), the habit of saving begins far earlier than when a person is eligible to open an IRA account. It was with that in mind that the American Bankers Association Education Foundation announced an initiative to encourage children to save for the future. The foundation designated April 17, 1997, as National Teach Children to Save Day. On that day, it is hoped bankers around the country will make presentations to elementary school children on the importance of saving money.

ABA has prepared a resource kit for bankers who wish to participate in the event. The kit, which costs $20, contains all the information needed to make a school presentation, including lesson plans, a pester to hang in the bank branch, a press release for local newspapers, and 15- and 30-second public service announcements.

A fact sheet in the kit points out that Americans in 1995 saved only 4.5% of their disposable income, compared to 1970 when they saved 8%. …
