In 2001 it was this reviewer's great good fortune to be entrusted with the digitization and cataloguing of Keith Summers's collection of English field recordings as part of the National Sound Archive's Traditional Music in England Project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. (1) Some of these recordings are now being made commercially available in two very different but complementary releases.

Keith's initial discovery of the living tradition in Suffolk, after he had heard recordings in the Caedmon/Topic Folk Songs of Britain series, is well known from his article 'Sing, Say or Pay! A Survey of East Suffolk Country Music'. (2) On his second visit to Blaxhall he met Bob Scarce, Fred Pearce, Fred List, Cyril Poacher, and Wicketts Richardson; and, as he himself noted, 'It became obvious to me that, far from having died out, there was still an active musical tradition not only in Blaxhall, but in the whole area locally; I decided then and there to document as much of it as I could.' That is exactly what he did, and of the 1278 separate items to be found on the 100 tapes that Keith deposited with the British Library, nearly eight hundred are of Suffolk performers, recorded between 1971 and 1981. (3) (For the British Library list of the collection, see Appendix 1.)
