Walk to Honor Great Teachers

Article excerpt

Consider sponsoring a Chalk Walk in your community this spring as a way to celebrate and honor the importance of teaching--and pave the way for the next generation of great teachers.

The annual PDK/FEA walk has been transformed into this year's Chalk Walk. PDK chapters throughout North America have been volunteering for months to sponsor these walks. By press time, 75 walks had already been scheduled, including a mega walk in Los Angeles in May 2009.

But, there's still room for more walks and more walkers.

"The Chalk Walk will actually be a network of many walks. Communities will be able to use the walks to show that they understand the difference that high-quality teaching makes in the lives of children. Walkers will be encouraged to bring posters with the teacher's name and likeness on it. Walkers and nonwalkers will have the opportunity to make a donation to the Chalk Walk in the name of a teacher who made a difference in their lives.

PDK chapters who run their own walks will be responsible for recruiting donors, walkers, and volunteers and must pledge to use funds generated locally to support the next generation of educators. …
