It is with sadness that His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew learned of the falling asleep in the Lord of the Reverend Dr Lukas Vischer, one of the greatest Swiss Reformed theologians of our times. May his soul find rest where the righteous repose, where there is no sorrow, grief or mourning.

Dr Vischer was a pre-eminent ecumenical theologian and a great ecumenist of the 20th century. He was also a good friend of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. He dedicated much of his life to the mission of the World Council of Churches, being sent as an observer to the Second Vatican Council, serving as director of the Faith and Order commission from 1966 to 1977 and conducting his milestone research on "Baptism, Eucharist and Ministry" (BEM). He was also a member and later served as co-president of the international theological dialogue between the Reformed churches and the Eastern Orthodox Church. In recent years he was particularly sensitive to environmental issues and was a great collaborator with our Church on the topic of climate change. …
