I am especially pleased to publish this special issue of Exceptional Children edited by Bryan Cook, Melody Tankersley and Timothy Landrum. It is the second special issue of Exceptional Children to address the topic of evidence-based practice. In the Winter, 2005 issue of the journal, we published a special issue spearheaded by Sam Odom and the Division of Research of the Council for Exceptional Children that examined quality indicators for different kinds of research methodology and drew guidelines for evidence-based practices within the field of special education. Since the publication of this seminal issue, we have published a number of reviews that have examined if specific instructional practices merit the label evidence-based, drawing on the guidelines established in the Winter, 2005 issue to make this determination. When Bryan, Melody, and Tim approached me about the possibility of doing a special issue of Exceptional Children devoted specifically to testing five educational practices using the evidence-based guidelines established in the earlier 2005 special issue, I was intrigued. …
