New Perspectives on the Education and Career of the Students of the Health Services Vocational College

The production of knowledge accelerates with the rate of the developing technology and new types of jobs are needed parallel to these developments (1). In this perspective, the training of manpower titled with technician in 4 semi-semesters of educational period is a matter of concern in one of the foundations of HSVC. The schools scattered all around the country are paid much attention to and supported by both the public and the local administrations closely. With in these schools, there are 258 programmers of education named as the technique, maritime, economical and administrative programmers and health programmers. When viewed from the perspective of Vocational Colleges to the country in general understanding, the number of the students in the departments of formal education shows a rise through years. However, despite the affirmative developments, the percentage of schooling is still not managed to be in the level of developed countries (2).

When the fact that a part of the manpower needed by health service are the students graduated from the related departments of HSVC is cared; these students are also expected to posses certain qualifications in order that the health service is given effective, qualified and productive. The studies determining the general characteristics of the students, their view to the job, profiles etc. are thought to affect positively the understanding of the qualifications.

With the idea of the above, studies concerning the profiles of the students carry a big importance for determining the socioeconomic status of the students, their views of academicals and sociological environment in the university and their expectations for the future. With the use of the views of the students, about the talked areas, as a feedback is accepted to add more to the regulations to improve and upgrade the quality of the education and the effective use of sources (3,4). When the limited number of the researches on deciding educational and professional wishes and expectations is considered, this type of survey results is also thought to help to train the manpower consistent with the level of the expectations (5).

Materials and Methods

This research is conducted among the students registered to the departments of MDS and MLT of ZKU (n=86), EU (105), OMU (n=102) and FU (n=59) in the educational period between 2005-2006. In the research, previously developed polls were used in literature and after the regulations needed were done, a 53-questioned poll was prepared in order to state the ideas of the students about their education, their perspectives and profiles about their jobs. After the preparation of polls, a trial was conducted on the university students (n=25), the comprehensibility of the questions was evaluated and was decided as applicable in the conclusion. The practice of this poll eventuated in the final period of January-February of 2006 and had an access to freshmen and sophomores of both departments. In the survey there were questions on the students' socio-demographic features, departments, the period of the time of their education, jobs and the social activities. The data collected after the survey was saved to the programming of statistics SPSS 13.5 and frequency and percentage calculations were done.

Results and Discussion

The findings after the evaluation are listed as a table below. According to this, Table 1 illustrates the students' expressive features, Table 2 states the students' approach to the department they are trained and their ideas about the job and Table 3 shows the students attitudes towards the social life.

Table 1 indicates that 75.6 % of ZKU HSVC students are age of between 18-23 years old. Of those students 74.4 % was female, 55.8% was registered to Medical Documentation and Secretarial Work, 55.8% was graduates from HSVC, 50.0% were living in cities, 82.6% has nucleus family, 54.7% spends money about 300 ytl per month and of those expenditure 62. …
