The Contributions of New Curriculum to Full Time Mainstreaming Education in Turkey

Article excerpt

Education is a basic way in reaching individual, environmental and social success, and it is a powerful way of achieving peace, freedom, social justice and universal integrity goals. For this reason, it is necessary to provide a continuous change and development in education at the aspect of individual, national and global dimensions. Because education constitutes the basic dimension of universal change and development in our age in which knowledge is seen as power. Therefore the aim of the societies trying to be information societies is to evaluate education and those whoa are educated with all features and to coordinate all the advancements in this direction (Bilhan, 2003; King, 1989).

Knowledge and its procession which change in a fast and changeable way especially with globalization gain importance. Information has been entering people's lives and expanding its interaction field. In this way, this development forming individual teaching causes people to consider learning and teaching with new understandings and reform their knowledge according to these understandings(Bacanli, 1999; Duman, 2002) .Reformed knowledge is the experiences that individuals acquired by synthesizing their own truths in the light of science and its general validity with their own experiences(Gurol, 2002, Cannon, 1997, Wheatley, 1991). It is aimed to be given meaning and interpreted of information by an individual not adopting and relating it in a similar way by all individuals. The main function of the information here reformed by an individual is to be heuristic, inquisitorial and constitutive not to totally reach to general truths. A learner needs to reform the data that come to cognition structures with experiences in order to achieve it (Bagci, 2003). The important thing here is, may be, the organisations of information configurations shaped with learner's responsibility in formal experiences(Mayer, 1992). This organisation is student's taking responsibility related to learning and doing the activities in this direction.

The Perspective of the New Curriculum to Differences

An understanding that indicates information should be built in mind has been adopted with new primary education curriculum in our country. According to this student is the centre and main determinant of learning. In the essence of this understanding a student forms his own learning style and process information according to his own potential. Students need guidance that helps tolerating their individual differences on their own and activates their learning (Guven, 2005) .This academic guidance is possible with a teaching program that can address to individual differences and accept students with these differences in the class. Because the important thing is the learning experiences eliminating individual differences but not the level between individual differences. The mainstreaming students in almost every class are in this process as a fact of our country. Therefore a teaching program filling needs for every difference is need ed but not a clear determination of differences between normal and mainstreaming students (Paul, Tumbull, Cruickshank) . The guiding and educational structure of the new curriculum was arranged by considering these differences. As it can be understood from the following table, special education acquisitions found in intermediate disciplines specific to each subject are included in to learning experiences appropriate to the subjects. The given examples are limited to Knowledge of Life.

As it is seen at the tables it has been tried to develop a consciousness and sensitivity towards special education in teaching program for students and mainstreaming students have been evaluated in the process of formal education. The special education acquisitions can only be perceived as directed to normal students. However it is known that the number of the mainstreaming students in every class is not too few to undervalue in our country. …
