A Call to High School Biology Teachers: ABT Needs Your Ideas

Article excerpt

This is an invitation to all high school biology teachers who have novel teaching ideas, especially for inquiry-based activities that relate to the biology content standards. We know that you have great creative ideas but suspect you may be somewhat hesitant in submitting manuscripts to The American Biology Teacher. We realize that you are at the front line of biology education and know what works, but perhaps you have not had experience in writing journal articles and receive only minimum professional rewards for doing so.

On the other hand, biology teachers in postsecondary institutions are encouraged, and even required to publish. However, these educators may have limited experiences in the high school biology classroom.

We would like to propose a solution. We propose teaming high school biology teachers with great ideas with a college biologist who is an experienced author in his/her area of expertise. The result can be a Feature Article, an Inquiry and Investigation, a How-To-Do-It, or even a Quick Fix. Examples of all of these types of articles are in almost every ABT issue. The two of you can work as a team to produce an article to share the strategy with colleagues across the nation.

Listed below are higher education faculty who have frequently published in biology education and who are willing to work with you in crafting a new manuscript for submission to The American Biology Teacher. Listed below their names is their area of expertise so you can match your ideas with their interest. High school biology teachers are encouraged to contact one of these prospective partners and share your ideas. After some back-and-forth discussion of the activity idea, a draft can be produced, mutually edited, and submitted to ABT for review and possible publication. All of the faculty members listed below have consented to be a writing partner and are looking forward to hearing from you. …
