THOSE ARE THE WATCHWORDS OF the 2009 ABA Government Relations Summit March 30-April 1 in Washington. It's our way of urging you to get engaged and participate in the work of your association--and the future of your bank.

This is a vitally important year for the banking industry and for the economy, and your presence in Washington is urgently needed.

We all know the condition of our national economy. And we are learning more every day about how the new Administration, the new Congress, the banking committees, and the regulators are going to deal with it.

As bankers and as the economic leaders of our communities, we have a responsibility to help the politicians and the regulators get it right. It's up to us. It may be the ultimate grassroots activity.

Let me make it clear: There is vitally important work to be done at the grassroots level that requires your participation. It's not only important that you come. It's important that you bring others from your bank and that you encourage other bankers to join you.

We're all needed at the GR Summit to help bring about positive change for our industry.

The new leadership in Washington has a very different economic perspective. Together, we need to make a proactive effort to make certain that they understand our role in the communities that elected them.

ABA's 2009 Government Relations Summit will be an intensive two-day gathering of bankers where we will hear from the leading policymakers from the Treasury Department, from Congress, the Federal Reserve Board and from the other federal banking regulators. The focus will be on:

* Mortgage market reform and economic recovery;

* Regulatory restructuring and the impact on your bank and your customers; and

* The role of the banking industry as the engine for economic recovery and growth. …
