Weaving the Web of Nursing

Ours is a relationship science. Nursing exists only in interaction with others.

Our professional services require us to care for others, to talk with them and touch them, and, simply stated, to relate to them on a wide range of levels ten physical, almost always interpersonal, and sometimes spiritual.

As professional nurses, it is our responsibility to set the tone and the pace verbal and nonverbal communication, keeping in the forefront of our decision making the desired patient goals. As we carry out our nursing magic, we can be understood to be weaving the web of nursing.

As nurse educators, we also have a web to weave, between and among all nurses. There is a common bond that we share in our professional beliefs, ideals, goals, and activities. Through our work in teaching students we bring a new generation into the fold, transmitting the essence of our disciplinary content and professional artistry.

I believe that we can weave our web by drawing our circle wider, by including in our communications our nurse colleagues -- locally, nationally, and globally. As I have traveled throughout the world in the last several years, I am struck with the similarity in our nursing education and practice issues. …
