This issue of Literacy Learning: the Middle Years continues our theme of diversity from volume 17, issue 2, with a particular focus this time on issues of language and culture. We hope that you enjoy the variety of papers, reviews and other articles in this issue and we are always keen to receive feedback from our readers. Please consider writing a response or short article that extends the thinking from material published here and submitting it for publication. We would also consider publishing letters to the editors.

The editorial team has enjoyed our term as Editors of Literacy Learning: the Middle Years over the past two years. It has been an opportunity for us to work as a team in a slightly different context than other collaborations we've been involved in over many years. So as our term draws to an end we've been reflecting on the place of a journal like Literacy Learning: the Middle Years in the current educational context. With the increasing intensification of work in the schools and universities, potential authors cannot always find the time to write for professional journals like this one. …
