Introduction to the Special Issue

Article excerpt

Applied behavior analysis (ABA) has been instrumental in the education, treatment, and habilitation of children and adults who have developmental disabilities (DD). The seminal publication by Baer, Wolf, and Risley (1968) defined critical dimensions of ABA that subsequently have been addressed in more than 4 decades of socially relevant research. This special issue of the International Journal of Behavioral Consultation & Therapy presents a contemporary perspective on ABA applications in DD.

Four of the articles report single-case intervention studies. Reed and Martens describe treatment of chronic breath holding, a serious but understudied clinical problem, in a young adult with mental retardation. Lancioni, O'Reilly, Singh, Sigafoos, and Oliva evaluated microswitch technology to promote purposeful motor movements by an adolescent who had multiple handicaps. The study by Brusa and Richman targeted stereotypy in a child with autism using a stimulus control procedure. The fourth article, by Fienup and Doepke, also focused on a child with autism, in this case to increase academic fluency. These studies demonstrate the breadth of ABA intervention within "real world" settings and as implemented by natural care providers.

Five additional articles concern intervention research with multiple participants. Stokes and Luiselli report a methodology for teaching parents to conduct functional analysis at home. The study by Brower-Breitwieser, Miltenberger, Gross, Orizondo-Korotko, Fuqua, and Breitwieser evaluated instructional preferences by children diagnosed with autism. Horn, Miltenberger, Weil, Mowrey, Conn, and Sams taught laundry skills to students with developmental disabilities through video prompting. …
