Cataloguing Commission: Working Group on the Exchange of Authority Data: A Brief Summary

Article excerpt

At the time I was asked to chair the group, its main aim appeared to be the safeguarding of the specific interest of music uniform titles, particularly in the context of the Virtual Inter national Authority File project (VIAF). That project's goal is to "lower the cost and increase the utility of library authority files by matching and linking the authority files of national libraries, and then making that information available on the Web." The methodology involves taking data sets from several national libraries, and using "OCLC's proven software" to find matches. I was, and remain skeptical of this strategy for music works. Matching personal names is not a specifically music problem; nor, theoretically is matching titles, but it is that this is the present interest. After several years' work, there is a test version available at http://viaf.org/

I submitted the title: "Cosi fan tutte"

The suggested matches were:

nozze di figaro

requiem mass

ballo in maschera

pulcinella

vater vater lichterloh

rose pilgerfahrt etc.

Thinking that this might be a "one-off" I then entered "Kindertotenlieder".

Result:

tito manlio

nozze di figaro

lucia di lammermoor opernquerschnitt

rosina

conciertos

symphonie en re mineur version pour grand orgue sinfonie d moll

concerto en la mineur op 16 pour piano et orchestre

symphony no 3 kindertotenlieder

symphonie no 2 resurrection

magnificat d dur bwv 243

wedding

Of course, these are title searches; presumably if one could search for author and title the results would be better, but I don't think this inspires confidence in the methodology. …
