On 3rd June 2008 in the houses of Parliament in Vienna, a parliamentary inquiry on the state and the future of music in Austria took place; it was organized by Peter Rantasa, the head of the Austria Music Information Centre and Vice President of IAML Austria. A parliamentary inquiry is a tool of the Parliament to get specific information on a special item by experts. IAML Austria was invited to join this meeting; the main topics were Music and Education, Austria as a Location of Music, and Broadcast and Music. Certainly it is not reasonable to expect miracles through events like this; but it was an opportunity to focus the interest of the deputies of the Austrian Parliament on matters of music, which is not to be taken for granted in Austria, the so-called Nation of music.

During the meeting of IAML Austria on 10 December 2008, Peter Rantasa reported on this inquiry. The second topic of our meeting was the question of terms of copyright for sound recordings. IAML Austria does not agree with the planned prolongation of terms of copyright from 50 to 95 years in the EU; a letter containing our arguments was sent to the Austrian Ministry of Justice. …
