Membership, Board, and General Assemblies

The branch has 62 members, of which 51 are institutional and 11 individual. The board consists of 13 members from various institutions, officials being Jaakko Tuohiniemi (University of Helsinki, Arts Faculty Library) as chairman, Pirjo Hakuni (Tampere City Library) as vice-chairman, Heikki Poroila (Vantaa City Library) as treasurer, and Jyrki Valto (Kirkkonummi Public Library) as secretary.

The Autumn meeting of the branch was held on 4 December 2008 at Turku City Library, which has a recently renovated and enlarged building with a very good music department, while the Spring meeting was held on 24 March 2009 at the Society of Swedish Literature of Finland (in Helsinki, or Helsingfors in Swedish), where we had a rare opportunity to see part of the Society's valuable collections of rare materials (though mostly non-musical).

Activities and Publications

The year 2008 sparked a grand celebration of 50 years of public music libraries in Finland. Tampere City Library hosted our seminar on The Meaning of Music to a Human Being on 10 October. Guest speakers were Professor Emeritus of Folk Music Heikki Laitinen, journalist Minna Lindgren, and musicologist Susanna Valimaki. A Festschrift edited by Heikki Poroila entitled Hiljaisuudesta nousi musiikki: Suomen yleisten kirjastojen musiik kiosastojen 50 vuotta [From Silence Emerged Music: 50 Years of Music Departments in Finnish Public Libraries] (ISBN 978-952-5363-31-9; Helsinki : Suomen musiikkikirjastoyh distys, 2008) was also announced at the seminar. …
