This issue of Literacy Learning: the Middle Years is the first for 2010. As always, the journal offers its readers, including teachers, pre-service teachers and academics, a wide range of articles about the learning and teaching of literacy in the middle years.

This issue is the final for the current editorial team. It seems like no time since we took on the editorial role, but that was two years and six issues--ago. In reflecting on our time as editors, we are very aware that we were reliant on the goodwill of so many. In particular, we wish to thank everyone who contributed articles or encouraged others to write. In today's world, where work intensification keeps everyone so busy, it was refreshing to know that so many teachers, academics and pre-service teachers were willing to put pen to paper (to use an old saying) so that their work could be shared with others. We were always grateful that authors were willing to share classroom activities and to reflect on teaching practices that are so often kept private within classroom walls.

One of the pleasures of doing the editorial work was being able to engage in conversations with authors, including those who were experienced writers as well as those who were 'first timers'. …
