For Vicky Gilpin, "lifelong learning" is more than just a trendy term.

Gilpin, a member of PDK's 2009-10 Class of Emerging Leaders, was the first teacher in her school district to receive an online degree and the first teacher in her district to earn a doctorate. She is passionate about rural education and is taking courses through Harvard University's Extension School to earn another master's degree.

"I try to bring the lens of rural education to my experiences there and bring back ideas and strategies for my students in rural areas," said Gilpin, an English teacher at Cerro Gordo High School in east central Illinois, where she teaches seven different courses a day. "I want my students to know that nothing should hinder their dreams of lifelong learning. Proactive behavior can create opportunities."

Gilpin, an adjunct instructor at Richland Community College and Millikin University, is also passionate about teaching. Attending and presenting at her first professional conferences influenced her attitude. …
