Manitoba Is Stealing Settlers

We have referred from time to time of the unjust and unfair interference to which setters ticketed through to Calgary and other portions of the territories are subjected whilst passing through Manitoba en route to their destination. Manitoba agents meet all the trains at Port Arthur or Rat Portages and, passing through the coaches, find out where each person is bound for, and those who have proposed to come further west than the cold, unhospitable prairies of Manitoba have to run a regular gauntlet of persecution and annoyance. Some of the towns are taking this matter up and have determined that while it continues the wholesale merchants of Winnipeg need expect no patronage from Territorial towns.

As instance of this interference was brought to our notice this morning. A short time ago a young Scotch girl who spent last year in Calgary visited her native home and returned a few days ago, bringing three companions. At Rat Portage some of the gentry above described boarded the train and finding out the destination of the parties, urged them very strongly against coming to such a terrible place as Calgary, which they represented as having a climate so severe in winter that it was impossible to bear with it.

They said the country and town were overstocked with female labor and that it was impossible for girls to get work of any kind, and that numbers were returning every day. …
