Show Us Why You Save: National Video Competition Taps Kids' Creativity about Savings

Want buzz? Do video. Want to engage kids? Same answer. When a banker suggested doing a contest for kids to talk about the value of savings using video, the members of ABA's Education Foundation Board quickly realized they were onto something.

"When I brought the idea back to my managers, they were really excited by it," says board member Erica Opstad, vice-president and director of corporate citizenship for U.S. Bank. "The creative about savings can be very dry in a banking environment," she adds, "but video in the hands of kids could be incredible. My managers were thinking, 'kids will be able to tell us what they think about saving'," instead of us telling them.

Called "Lights, Camera, Save!", the contest is an offshoot of the ABA Education Foundation's popular Teach Children to Save program. In the contest's inaugural year, participation is being limited to 250 banks. Registration is open to July 31. The foundation worked with a marketing firm to come up with a turnkey package--all downloadable--to make it as easy as possible for banks to participate. Each bank provides a panel of judges, promotes the contest, and then selects a winning video to submit to a national judging panel by Dec. 8.
