ABABJ: Given all that bankers have on their plate, why should they make time to attend the Convention this year?

Doug Adamson: There's no better way to get a lot of information, insights, and ideas in a short time than at the Convention. With the challenges facing the industry and all the changes ahead, this really is a must-attend event. Plus, given the couple of years we've just been through, I think it's high time to take a break from the day-to-day and enjoy one of America's great cities and the company of their fellow bankers.

ABABJ: How does the Convention differ from ABA's National Conference for Community Bankers?

DA: Both meetings have strong learning and networking components to them. NCCB focuses on community bank management issues, while the Convention takes a broader, more strategic look at the industry and institutions. The Convention is ABA's Annual Meeting. Our officers are elected at this meeting. Our outgoing chairman reviews the year just past, and our incoming chairman sets the agenda the Association will follow for the year ahead. It's important for ABA members to participate in this transition of leadership.

ABABJ: Charlie Gibson, the former ABC News anchor, is speaking, and he's also moderating a panel. What will that panel discuss?

DA: First off, it will be great to get Charlie Gibson's perspective on the major issues facing the U.S. both at home and abroad. We also wanted to take advantage of his extraordinary interviewing skills to facilitate a discussion about the opportunities and challenges for the industry going forward. …
