A New Emerging Educator Representative

Dear ACEI Emerging Educators:

I am honored to have been elected as your Emerging Educator Representative for 2010-12. I am a Ph.D. student at The State University of New York at Buffalo, where I am working on my dissertation on the unique needs of refugee children and the issue of bullying. I am also working with a diverse group of preschoolers at the university's Early Childhood Research Center.

With all these commitments, why did I take up the additional role of being the Emerging Educator Representative for ACEI? I am reminded of my personal purpose and values, which are aligned with the mission of ACEI: "To promote and support in the global community the optimal education and development of children, from birth through early adolescence, and to influence the professional growth of educators and the efforts of others who are committed to the needs of children in a changing society."

One of the ways to fulfill this mission is to come together to raise funds in building a school for girls in Tanzania. As student members, we are all privileged to have the opportunity for an education and it has made a difference in our lives. However, many children in the world do not have this opportunity, and so we must do what we can to help them make it possible. …
