Genial Host at THE Biker Event: South Dakota Banker Welcomes Riders from All over the Globe

There are bankers who ride motorcycles. There are banker-bikers who make the pilgrimage to Sturgis Rally, world's largest motorcycle rally. And there is Boyd Waara, an ag lender and biker who's been to the rally 20 times, the last six as part owner of the Elkview Campground just outside of Sturgis, S.D.

Held since 1938, the rally grew from a small racing event put on by the Jackpine Gypsies Motorcycle Club to a mega tourist attraction. Officially a week-long event (the first week of August), the rally unofficially runs for ten days or more, Waara says. It draws 300,000 to 600,000 people in recent years.

Motorcycle competitions still occur during the rally, but the Sturgis scene evolved into much more. There's a wild side (kept in check by a heavy police presence, notes Waara), but the rally includes enough mainstream entertainment to draw families and people from all walks.

"It's really a big, annual reunion," says Waara.

The Elkview campground, which Waara owns with four partners, sits on 70 acres adjacent to Interstate 90, five miles southeast of Sturgis. Though not the most famous Sturgis campground--that would be the Buffalo Chip, a huge operation that hosts big-name entertainment nonstop during the rally--Elkview serves beer and food and has live entertainment. The partners bill Elkview as an alternative to the downtown scene: "Have a great time all day and still be able to get some sleep at night," it says on the camp's website (elkviewcampground.com).
