Denver in November! Make an Impact in Biology Education

The end of the year is quickly approaching, spring is in the air, and soon we will have an opportunity to reflect on the events of the past school year. With so much happening economically, with people losing their jobs, with cutbacks in educational spending, it has been a very demanding year. NABT has been affected by all of these circumstances as well. We have become leaner at the office to hold our costs in check while still providing services to our membership. The staff works very hard for you. As President of NABT I am very mindful of the passion NABTers have for life science education and how much NABT is striving to support advancements for our membership and for those who share our affinity for lifelong learning.

If I may, let me mention some of what is happening at the National Convention in Denver this year. For the past two years, a major interest in undergraduate biology education has been growing Within the nation. The National Science Foundation (NSF), The American Association for the Advancement in Science (AAAS), The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), and the American Institute of Biological Sciences (AIBS) have been examining undergraduate biology education. NABT was asked to participate With these national science leaders because NABT has an excellent, active, and highly professional two- and fouryear college and university faculty membership who desire to be accomplished teachers as well. Owing to NABT's involvement in these national discussions, a major focus of the 2009 NABT National Convention in Denver (think Denver in November) will be targeted on undergraduate biology education. …
