The Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre at 90: Some New Publications

Academic musical education in Estonia is only a year younger than the Republic of Estonia. In 1919 the Tallinn Higher Music School, the predecessor of the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre was founded. Several generations of Estonian musicians, music teachers, musicologists, actors, and stage directors have been graduated from the Academy, including internationally acclaimed composers Arvo Part, Erkki-Sven Tuur, and conductors Eri Klas and Tonu Kaljuste. With only 706 students (487 in the Bachelor Studies, 181 in the Master Studies, and 38 in the Doctoral Studies) the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre is the smallest among the six Estonian public universities and academies. In Fall 2009, Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre was celebrating its 90th birthday.

To commemorate the anniversary, the Academy presented several new publications: a double CD album Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre 90 and a DVD on our current academic life. In this jubilee year, the book Estonian Sound Recordings 1939 (ISBN 978-99859797-7-8) was finished as well. In Fontes 55:3 I wrote the news about the discovery in Denmark of unique Estonian sound recordings from 1939. Now, all the recordings from 1939 have been digitized and the bilingual book (in Estonian and in English) about the whole story is available. The book supplement has of 12 CDs.

In 2009, a new periodical, Res musica (ISSN 1736-8553), was presented as well. It is the peer-reviewed yearbook of Estonian Musicological Society and the musicology department of Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre. …
