Dear Mrs. Woolf,

Your letter offering to do just what I had asked you to do in one sent a few days ago--hold the "Evening at Dr. Burney's" in England until March when we could print it here--has just come to us. If "Life and Letters" wishes to publish it in its March number (or later), we shall be able to do the same and will do so with pleasure. And so we needn't press you for the manuscript immediately.

I hear "Orlando" being talked of wherever I go. May I say that I took it up with anxiety and put it down with exaltation? It is as noble and rich as Orlando's country seat, which I like to think of as Knole, remembering a happy day I spent there last June. I like to think of the whole record as an autobiography--of the sort I should have wished from you. Among the parts, I enjoyed especially, as a Near Eastener by adoption, the fabulous details of the Turkish interlude--a delightful reference to the old travellers. …
