Dear Miss Virginia Woolf

I have just put down A Room of One's Own, the most exciting book I have read since Heloise and Abelard.

You will not want to be pestered with letters from all the women whose minds you have set in a ferment, and I confess I am acting on a merely selfish impulse in writing to thank you.

There is a problem which faces women who earn your 500 [pounds sterling] & a room etc. It is how to conserve their energy so as to leave a margin for authorship. I myself earn by my wits a comfortable income, but at such a sacrifice that at the end of the day, I am too tired to concentrate on writing.

Yet the idea you seem to hold that ordinarily intelligent people can by writing exactly what they think about this and that pave the way for the advent of "Shakespeare's sister" is so delightful that I am encouraged to continue my efforts. …
