In Memoriam: Louis A. Reibling: 1938-2010

On September 13, 2010, we lost a friend and colleague when Dr. Louis A. Reibling passed away. He was visiting with his family in the St. Louis area when he suffered a heart attack.

Lou was Dean and later Vice President of Instruction at Schoolcraft College. He had been with the College since 1980 and retired in 2004.

With a passion for research, Lou lived by the motto: "If it moves, measure it." As an extension of his interest in higher education and educational research, he co-founded The Community College Enterprise-first known as the Michigan Community College Journal--in 1995. Under his devoted leadership and vision, the journal grew from a local to a national publication. During his time at Schoolcraft, Lou was supportive of the College's literary journal, The MacGuffin, as well. At the regional/national level, he also served for more than 20 years as a Consultant/Evaluator of the Higher Learning Commission for the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

Dr. Reibling was an adjunct faculty member at Central Michigan University where he provided leadership for graduate students at various stages of their research. This work was another manifestation of his love for research and scholarship. Dr. Reibling provided academic leadership for many initiatives both local and statewide. …
