An action research project to determine staff's perceptions of changing the environment on a complex needs ward for older adults with mental health needs.

For older adults with complex mental health needs, environmental adaptation is increasingly recognised as improving quality of life, maximising independence and reducing the incidence of problem behaviour. However, it was not possible to identify any studies carried out in a hospital setting.

The purpose of this action research study was to investigate whether changing the environment in one specific complex needs ward could improve the patient experience in the opinion of the staff. Aims of the project were to enhance the patient experience on the ward by improving the physical, social and cultural environment, to raise the awareness of ward staff regarding the current evidence base underpinning the environmental changes, and finally to involve staff in every stage of the change process in order to ensure ownership of the project. …
