The New South Wales Science Teachers Association provides publications and professional development events to support the professional needs of Science teachers from K-12 across NSW.

STANSW is an endorsed provider with the NSW Institute of Teachers STANSW provides professional development to meet the mandatory professional development hours required for New Scheme Teachers. All STANSW courses are now accredited with the Institute.

2011 Events include:

Professional Development for Early Career Teachers

This popular series of four full day workshops held in Sydney focuses on the needs of early career science teachers. The sessions are relevant to all teachers in their first years of secondary science teaching. However, past participants have also included experienced teachers returning to the workforce after an extended absence and those who have retrained to work in the secondary science area. The workshops include comprehensive sessions on programming, assessment, classroom management and the requirements of the NSW Institute of Teachers.

Professional Development for Experienced Teachers

This series of four full day workshops includes sessions of interest to experienced teachers as well as both new and experienced science faculty leaders and those planning to move into leadership roles in the near future. The workshops include sessions on programming, assessment, time management, building an effective team, conflict resolution and managing work-related stress.

K-6 Conference and 7-10 Conference

7-10 Science Curriculum Conference 'Implementing the change' (on April 1 & November 25) and the K-6 Conference 'Chemistry in the Australian Curriculum--Science K-6' (on March 25) will be fully accredited with the NSW Institute of Teachers.

Meet the Markers Conference will be held on May 14 at Marion Catholic College, Kenthurst and May 28 at Sydney Girls High School, Surry Hills

Regional NSW

STANSW takes the Meet the Markers (held in Sydney each year) to regional centres in NSW. The day will also consist of HSC/SC preparation lectures for students, in all science subjects.

Members are encouraged to check the STANSW Website for further information on these and other STANSW events. STANSW always considers further ideas for courses that could be held in metropolitan and/or regional NSW. Contact STANSW for further information via www.stansw.asn.au

Rosemary Hafner Memorial Scholarships 2011

Established in 2009, in memory and recognition of the work of Rosemary Hafner, STANSW offers two Scholarships each year to assist regional and metro teachers with their professional development.
