First Volunteer Community Event

This was the first time that NEHA held a volunteer community event in an effort to increase our sustainability efforts and reduce our carbon footprint. The volunteers worked at the Shepherd's Corner Farm and Ecology Center, where they planted crops and installed poles to grow tomatoes. In addition, attendees learned about the eco-friendly practices used on the farm to improve their sustainability efforts. Attendees got to enjoy being in the outdoors, socializing with their fellow NEHA volunteers, and giving back to the local community.

Green Initiatives for the AEC

* Increased online registration and e-mail confirmations.

* Collected a $10 surcharge that was automatically assessed on any hard copy registration and donated the proceeds to TerraPass to offset the carbon emissions that result from paper waste. Also encouraged attendees to donate to TerraPass.

* Held a volunteer community event to offset carbon footprint.

* Used eco-friendly name badge ribbons.

* Informed staff and volunteers involved in the on-site office of the environmental policy.

* Continued to reduce the number of hard copy brochures sent to potential attendees by utilizing an online promotional strategy, which helped to cut waste produced by printing and mailing hard copies.

* Eliminated the production of the conference CD for the second year by offering these resources through the Virtual AEC instead. …
