 Shadows flit across the vaulted ceiling to a high winding jig that
pipes through every crack and gap. The isolated bastle was exposed to
the sweep of a reiving wind, drilling the shell of her home with the bit
of its beak.
 Winter used the coulter to jemmy a gap between door and jamb and pulled
back a wooden bar to get in. The sisters, lying on each side of her,
kept Maggie Crozier still while he broke the locks off two chests and a
cupboard and took much lawn, four or five silk handkerchiefs, some
cambric and fifteen yards of blue shalloon. And from a small chest seven
gowns, nine bed gowns, fifty yards of red, blue, black and spotted
ribbon.
He took an old striped petticoat from the bed head and from the cupboard
four or five pounds of white thread, nine pair of women's white
cotton stockings, two pounds of currants and raisins and half pound of
starch. From a drawer in a dresser he took one dozen handkerchiefs and
shawls and ate a piece of cut cheese and bread from the cupboard. …
