Meetings and Conferences

The 5nd Annual Working Meeting of Librarians Cataloguing Music took place in the National Union Catalogue Centre NUKAT in Warsaw on 30-31 May 2011. Like the previous meeting, it was organized with the cooperation of the NUKAT Centre and the Sound Archives Section of the Polish Librarians Association. More than 50 music librarians from the main Polish libraries took part in the meeting. This year the meeting had a form of workshops focused on the cataloguing of sound recordings. Music librarians from the Division of Sound and Audiovisual Documents of the National Library in Warsaw presented specific examples and commenting different ways of cataloguing.

The annual Working Meetings of the Librarians Cataloguing Music provide opportunity to present important issues of music librarianship and to exchange experiences between cataloguers from cooperating libraries. The Meetings are very important for the process of cataloguing music collections in Poland. Documents about new standards have been developed as a result of workshops and discussions. Among them the most important are: 1) updates and unifications related to music in the Polish version of the MARC21 format for bibliographic record and 2) the principles for creating a uniform title for music.

Integration of music librarians is also an important issue. Working contacts of librarians cataloguing music in different systems indicate a sense of a broad cooperation, determining its direction and purpose--improving the quality of cataloguing description, data integration and facilitating access to information for users. …
